About Us

The Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators (CICBV) is the largest professional valuation organization in Canada.

It is a self-regulated organization that, in addition to governing its Members with a strict Code of Ethics and Practice Standards, manages the Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) / expert en évaluation d'enterprises (EEE) designation.

Increasingly, the CBV/EEE is recognized as the premier credential for professional business valuators in Canada, with Members providing a broad range of business valuation services to Canada's business, legal, investment, banking and government communities.

The CICBV objectives are to:

• Foster, promote and develop the profession of business valuations;
• Establish and ensure adherence to a high standard of ethics;
• Provide mutual assistance within the profession and facilitate the exchange of ideas and concepts of valuation through conferences, meetings, exhibitions and other means;
• Foster research and education;
• Establish programs for examining and testing Members; and
• Establish a library and publish papers and journals in the field of valuation.

The CICBV and the CBV/EEE designation have an unrivaled reputation which was built on the following:

Uniform examination: The uniform examination (Membership Entrance Examination) to obtain the Chartered Business Valuation (CBV/EEE) designation. (The EEE designation is the French equivalent).
Code of Ethics: CICBV’s Code of Ethics, Discipline Procedure and Practice Standards ensures and protects the highest possible industry service.
Wide-spread recognition: The CICBV has received recognition by organizations such as The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) as the accrediting body in the field of Business Valuation in Canada.The CICBV Practice Standards have been quoted by various regulatory agencies as the industry standard. Courts also recognize CBVs/EEEs as expert witnesses in valuation matters.

History

The CICBV is a non-profit professional Institute that was established in 1971 to promote high standards in business and securities valuation. The introduction of taxation of capital gains in Canada facilitated the general need for business valuation.

Formerly known as the Canadian Association of Business Valuators (CABV), the CICBV was founded by 28 valuation professionals under the leadership of the late Mr. George Ovens.
